Turning Waste Into Treasure
Grocery stores can’t possibly sell all of their produce, that’s why America’s Grow-a-Row is there to help. Barbara Westgate and Nancy Hara were looking for a way to use their talents to help America’s Grow-a-Row. And help they have! Barbara and Nancy each manage a Shop-Rite gleaning program where their dedicated volunteers help to pick up “not quite retail perfect” produce and deliver it to food pantries that need it. Believe it or not, their hard work is generating about 1,000 pounds a week of beautiful fresh, healthy produce that would otherwise be disposed. Shop-Rite is thrilled that the produce is being used, the recipients are so happy to have food of any type, particularly fresh, and our volunteers love this opportunity to help alleviate hunger. Above all, we’re ecstatic to have such committed and capable people working
for America’s Grow-a-Row. If you’d like to help with this volunteer opportunity or even better, know of a grocery store that would like to participate, please let us know. ![]()
Are You a Backyard Gardener with Excess Produce?
America’s Grow-a-Row would be glad to deliver your produce for you - no amount too small - if you simply drop it off at Peaceful Valley Orchards in Pittstown, NJ. If this is not convenient for you, we encourage you to visit the Ample Harvest website at www.ampleharvest.org. Lots and lots of backyard gardeners often grow far more produce than they can actually use … with the extra crop left unharvested. AmpleHarvest.org invites food banks/pantries to register in a central directory that accepts name/address/phone information, along with preferred delivery day[s]/times, an optional photograph of the building and any other information the pantry may want to post. Once registered, a pantry can then be easily found by gardeners looking for a food pantry within a specific distance of their home. AmpleHarvest.org even provides detailed driving instructions from the gardener’s home to the pantry. Use of AmpleHarvest.org is free of charge.
